The Charlie Gard case – socialism maturing to open dictatorship.

« For teaching and professing the most fatal error of Communism and Socialism, they assert that “domestic society or the family derives the whole principle of its existence from the civil law alone; and, consequently, that on civil law alone depend all rights of parents over their children. »

Encyclical Quanta Cura – Pope Pius IX, December 8, 1864.

In brief summary of the case :

Charlie Gard was born in the UK the fourth of August 2016 with mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, a severe condition that left him struggling for his life. In March this year, doctors told his parents that there was nothing more they could do. They recommended removing his ventilator and letting him die.

Undeterred, his parents Chris Gard and Connie Yates searched for alternatives. They discovered an experimental treatment that offered the small possibility of a cure. However, it is extremely expensive and is only offered in the United States.
Charlie’s parents launched an online crowd-funding campaign and received tens of thousands of donations. In all, the parents raised over 1.3million British pounds – more than enough to pay for the treatment.

For the first time, there was a glimmer of hope for Charlie. Then, inexplicably, the hospital where Charlie was being kept – Great Ormond Street Hospital in London refused to release him. They said they had determined that the proposed treatment was unlikely to help Charlie and would only prolong his suffering.

Shocked, Charlie’s parents appealed that decision. A court ruled that Charlie should be permitted to “die with dignity” (a chilling phrase, for those familiar with pro-death rhetoric). They appealed the case all the way up to the UK Supreme Court. At every step, they lost. Then, finally, the European Court of Human Rights refused to overrule the UK court.

As Mr Phil Lawler of Catholic Culture summarized:

« The injustice here is not that Charlie was taken off his life-support system. The decision to turn off a ventilator is always painful, but sometimes justified.
The injustice is that Charlie will die when the hospital administration wants, and where the hospital administration wants. His parents have been deprived of their right to supervise his case. They could not take him the U.S. for experimental treatment. They could not take him home to die in peace. »

Charlie was essentially kidnapped and his death determined by the British state. This is an heinous denial of both the parental and Charlie’s natural rights. Yet the reaction against it was relatively muted. Why is this? Because the mass of the population has become extremely complacent regarding the defence of their liberties and also because this being an isolated case, few recognise it represents a universal threat to liberty.

But indeed it does! A violation of rights of this magnitude, informs that fundamental rights have already been deeply stripped from the nation.As Thomas Jefferson – third President of the United States, said;

« Whereas it appears that however certain forms of government are better calculated than others to protect individuals in the free exercise of their natural rights and are at the same time themselves better guarded against degeneracy, yet experience hath shown, that even under the best forms, those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny. »

Preamble to a Bill for the More General Diffusion of Knowledge, 1778

Masked by these ‘slow operations’, the majority of the population do not recognise that their liberties have been severely eroded and commensurately, they have lost the knowledge of true liberty.

In summary, that such an enormous crime by the British state and the judiciary goes without vigorous challenge by the mass of the citizens and the same is true of the totalitarian operations of the European state child-care systems, presages open tyranny if this process is not reversed.

« The goal of socialism is communism. » Vladimir Lenin

« We cannot expect the Americans to jump from capitalism to communism, but we can assist their elected leaders in giving Americans small doses of socialism, until they suddenly awake to find they have communism. » Nikita Khrushchev – First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, 1954-`1963.

What must be done ?

“What country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time that this people preserve the spirit of resistance?” Thomas Jefferson

“If you love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.” Samuel Adams – ‘Father of the American Revolution’, 1776
